that the first flake never fell like the others. It drifted sideways, hung in the air like a held breath, and settled on a single upturned face. Whoever it touched was promised the brightest year of their life.
For nineteen winters it had never touched Isla Brenn. Every year she stood in the square, chin tilted to the sky, eyes the exact blue of glacier water, waiting. Her grandmother said the snow was shy. Her brother said the snow had taste. Isla said nothing at all, because she was too busy hoping.
This year the sky over Kalden turned the colour of pewter by noon. The bakery shut early. The dogs refused to go outside. By dusk the whole village had gathered, scarves pulled up to their noses, while the clouds sank so low they brushed the church spire.
Then the first flake fell.
It did not drift. It plunged, straight as a dropped needle, and stopped a finger's width from Isla's lips. The crowd gasped. Around it, a thousand more flakes froze in mid-air, glittering and perfectly still. The wind died. The church bell stopped mid-swing without a sound.
And from somewhere inside the frozen snow, a voice whispered her name, then said, quite crossly: "You're late."
