Ignition Event, uncontrolled flames triggered temporal fractures. A kitchen fire could melt a day into yesterday. A factory blaze might resurrect the dead — twisted and wrong. The only ones equipped to deal with it were the Firefighters’ Guild.
They weren’t just first responders. They were part-time physicists, part-time priests, and full-time erasers of impossible mistakes.
I joined young, after Mom combusted in our garden shed and reappeared five minutes later whispering in a dead language. She was…not herself.
Today was my first solo call. A three-alarm anomaly in New Zurich’s SkyDistrict. Coordinates came with a warning: “CLASS RED — Distorted Entities Possible.”
I dropped from the airtram onto the roof, flame-retardant suit hissing as it sealed. Heat shimmered across the air like glass. Below, orange flames flickered through broken windows — but they weren’t moving right. They danced in reverse, unburning everything they touched.
Then I saw it — a figure standing in the blaze.
It was me.
Same gear. Same face. But older. Eyes glowing silver.
He raised his axe and mouthed something I couldn’t hear.
Then he charged.
