an early riser, mostly because he enjoyed being the first to complain about everything. But Olympus was strangely quiet. No thunder rolled across the clouds. No eagle screeched from the cliffs. The golden hall felt cold for the first time in a thousand years.
He reached for his thunderbolts, which he kept beside his throne the way mortals keep their keys by the door.
The stand was empty.
Zeus roared for Hermes, for Athena, for anyone. Nobody came, because every god on the mountain was standing at the edge of the palace staring at the horizon in silent horror. There, rising out of the sea like a storm with arms, came Typhon: the oldest and most terrible monster of them all, with a hundred serpent heads, eyes like burning ships, and a single thunderbolt, Zeus's thunderbolt, clutched in his enormous fist.
The monster was climbing Olympus. Every step shook the mountain.
Zeus did the only thing left to him. He unfolded his wings: the great golden wings he had not used since the war against the Titans, their feathers stiff with age. He leapt from the palace and flew straight at the monster.
Typhon laughed with a hundred mouths, turned the stolen thunderbolt in his hand, and fired it straight at the king of the gods.
