Egypt Pharaoh Cleopatra in a women-themed, pop art-style DIY brick-art mosaic. 10,769 classic-compatible plastic bricks that start with the tale behind them...
Part 1... Alexandria, 48 BC. The queen of Egypt was not supposed to be in Alexandria at all. Her brother Ptolemy had ...See More
exiled her to the desert, set his soldiers on every gate of the city, and announced to anyone who would listen that Cleopatra was finished.
Cleopatra, who had never once been finished in her life, disagreed.
Julius Caesar had sailed into the harbour with his legions, and whoever reached him first would rule Egypt. Ptolemy had a palace, an army and a general named Achillas with a famously short temper. Cleopatra had one loyal friend, a merchant called Apollodorus, a small fishing boat, and a very large carpet.
They crossed the harbour at midnight, oars wrapped in cloth. At the palace steps Apollodorus hoisted the rolled carpet onto his shoulder, queen and all, and strolled past the guards with the bored expression of a man delivering a gift nobody wanted. Inside the carpet it was hot, dark and smelled of goat. Cleopatra counted steps. One hundred and twelve. A door. Another door. Low voices.
Then the carpet was dropped onto marble, and Apollodorus gave it a heroic shove.
Cleopatra rolled out into lamplight, tossed back her golden headdress and lifted her chin, ready to dazzle the most powerful man in the world.
The man standing over her was not Julius Caesar.
It was Achillas. And his sword was already drawn.
