Behind the Bricks, Part One...
The mist clung thick and yellow to the air, curling through the empty streets and swirling around the flickering lamplights. A chill gnawed at the bones of anyone daring enough to step outside. In the dead silence, Thomas crept forward, every step a risk. He’d heard the rumors—creatures with glowing eyes that moved within the mist, twisted and undead, but no one believed it. He was almost certain it was just superstition, until now.
Then, in the haze ahead, he saw them. Their eyes were a searing violet, burning through the fog like beacons. Their skin looked faded and torn, as though their bodies had once belonged to someone else. The two figures stood motionless, facing him. A low hum filled the air, rattling Thomas’s thoughts as he froze, unsure whether to run or hide. The creatures took a step forward, and Thomas realized he couldn’t move, rooted by some unseen force holding him in place. His heart pounded as he watched them approach, something terrible lurking in their unblinking gaze.
“Who are you?” he whispered, though he knew he wouldn’t want the answer.
