Behind the Bricks, Part One...

The spaceship hummed softly as Captain Rivera eyed Dr. Yates across the narrow control bay. He'd been acting strangely since the surface mission, twitching and averting his eyes, and Rivera had caught a momentary flicker €”a brief shimmer over Yates' hand that revealed alien skin beneath. Holding his breath, Rivera clenched his fists and steadied his voice. €œEveryone, back to the shuttle, € he commanded, his gaze fixed on Yates. The other crewmates exchanged confused glances but complied, sensing his urgency.

Yates hesitated, then lunged at Rivera. In one swift motion, the crew reacted, subduing him with a stun gun. His form wavered, blurring and twisting, until it transformed into a sinewy creature with elongated limbs and dark, penetrating eyes. Rivera fought the urge to recoil, struggling to steady his voice. €œWhat have you done with our doctor? €

The alien hissed, baring sharp, translucent teeth but offered no reply. The silence stretched, thick with tension, as they restrained the creature. An unsettling thought gripped Rivera €”if one had managed to infiltrate their crew, how many more could there be? He felt his pulse quicken, the walls of the shuttle suddenly feeling too close, too confining.
